Power Struggle in The Yellow Wallpaper In the late 1800s, women were treated as second class citizens or slaves. They were defined legally and socially by their male counterparts, be it father, brother or husband. Women of this time were considered property, owned by men, and denied indigenous rights. A dictatorial patriarchy oppressed and silenced women, interpretation them incapable of meaningful life independent of a man.
