As the man starts to question his faith, he realizes that his perfections absence is what brings out his undefended faith. Realizing that at the edge of absence, the nearness of his personate awaits; he openly feels that the fact that he cannot see god, makes god look crimson closer to him. This brings his faith even closer, because he believes that even though God cannot be seen he is satisfactory to see a close connection that brings his faith to God even closer.

He uses the ph rase Now I will get laid you against myself! , against fear, which swallows my breath from a cupped palm, against the world which orders me to destroy my body (lines 1-4) to subscribe the persons highest affection for God. In these lines Shternberg uses personification to pose fear. Fear which is an emotion, in the poem is being used to live a swallowing action.
